On Saturday, September 20th, the Westridge Varsity Cross Country team competed in the Rose City Running Classic. The team is mostly composed of first year runners, with the exception of captains Lucy Grindon ’15 and Sarah Kim ’15. The tigers ran in the Varsity Girl’s 5k race, competing against La Serna High School, La Salle, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, and Prep League familiars Flintridge Preparatory. The tigers, in the spirit of the school theme, “We’re all in this together,” gave a High School Musical- esque cheer before the starting whistle blew: “What team? Tigers! What team? Tigers! Get your head in the race!” At 9:15 A.M. the girls were off to the races, running roughly three miles on the trails of La Canada Flintridge’s Hahamonga Watershed Park.
At 22:31 minutes, freshman Emma Linde crossed the finish line, placing first among the Westridge runners and eighth in the entire Varsity Girl’s race. Westridge placed third overall in the race. Two of the runners made personal records, with Amanda Milley ‘17 beating her previous time by a second, and Madeline Emslie ‘16 surpassed her previous record by 25 seconds.
Grace Barar ‘17, who couldn’t compete due to a knee injury, was still very optimistic about running and said, “I like cross country because it’s not too competitive and the people are nice,” about her first year being on the team.
